Script

This is the final edition of the script. Scroll down to see why changes were made and how the script has progressed from the beginning of the scriptwriting process.

This is the finished script, transcribed from the finished feature. It is visible that a lot of content has been taken out. It had to be shortened in order to get all the vital content into the feature in terms of interviewee, voxpop and music content. A large amount of narration was lengthy and in order to keep the pace of the feature fast, snappy and upbeat some of it had to be cut. This didn’t take away from the narrator/listener relationship as the narrator still uses empathetic tones of voice and shows a great deal of interest which strengthens the relationship.

This is the third edition of the script.

A third version of the script had to be made as some of the originally desired interviewees were unavailable. We researched further and looked into getting alternative interviewees. It turned out that the interviewees we could get were absolutely fantastic so it was a blessing in disguise. It was also decided that the narration which advertised the blog was taken out as it wasn’t appropriate. This kind of advertising is not often found in features. On Radio 1, the advertising for further multiplatform information comes before or after the feature which is spoken by the live presenter. This also helped to free up precious seconds that can be used for vital content such as the interviewee audio clips.

This is the second draft of the script used for A Woman’s World. Have a read and tell us what you think!

And this is the original first draft for the script so you can see how we have progressed throughout the making of the feature. Go to the bottom of the page to see why we made the changes.

The first draft for the script was a first attempt and a work in process that was written during the early stages of the making of ‘A Woman’s World’. At this time the bulk of research had been carried out but little first hand audio had been recorded. Due to this it was hard to get a feel of what the content of the script should be and therefore it was based upon secondary research and what was written in the proposal and nothing more. It is clear when read that the script has a log way to go to being finished. Some areas of narration are only pointers and not fully comprehensive sentences nor do they add anything to the piece. There are also some statements that could cause offence and are subjective assumptions such as; “Why do girls find it so important to be skinny”. As narrator Amy should be a voice to the people and as that she should be completely objective so that the listeners are free to make up their own minds about the information given in interviews etc. Not all girls do find it so important to be skinny so the statement is untrue and could cause conflict.

On top of this there is also the problem of the relationship between the narrator and the listening audience. In the proposal it was stated that “The narrator will be seen as a peer to the listener, seen as on the same level and be going on the journey of discovery alongside the listener. Amy is to come across informal and talk to the listener as a friend, and through the narration build an image of herself that the listener can imagine and picture as a real person that they can therefore relate to and feel happy to go on that journey with.” The problem with the original script is that Amy doesn’t do this, there is no personal information about her, no sound pictures and the way she speaks is formal and to the point. This was resolved in the updated script where Amy gives a brief background of herself and also describes her own image. Further down the piece she uses sound pictures to describe where she is when she interviews her interviewees so that the listeners can imagine a picture in their head of her in a particular room and get a feel of the atmosphere. The technique has been applied of using rhetorical questions throughout the script so that it gets the listener actively thinking about the information they hear and relating it to themselves throughout. Also, this helps for when listeners tune in half way through that don’t know what the feature is about as by posing questions at regular intervals they are sure to tune in within not much more than a minute of a question being asked. As soon as a question is asked it should engage any new listeners to the feature as they will instinctively start thinking about an answer to the question.

There is naturally more content in the revised script as more detail has been added. Looking at the amount of content there is in the new script it will take up about 4 minutes of the 15 minute feature. This may need to be altered once all audio is recorded and put to edit as it with all the other content it may run over the 15 minutes.
